Yet Again Dangerous Life (Upgrading WordPress)

Once again I lead a dangerous life and upgraded WordPress to version 2.7 (“Coltrane”).

The upgrade was as smooth as ever (okay, a few glitches but anyway).

First impressions?
Hmm, new admin interface (dashboard), lots of new stuff. Improved UI, I like it.

Pretty swell.

Will write more about this if I manage to find the time somewhere…

On Posting Photos

Photography is nice, even nicer when one manages to take photos to die for, so to say. (Like these)

Personally I like photography, like taking pictures, love the feeling when some of my shots turns out to be exactly as I wanted it to be.

And yes, I’d also like someone else than yours truly to see my best photos.

And as I’m all for Web and digital solutions, I’d like to share my photos online.

Simple google search with “share photos online” returns over 31 million results. Obviously no good for me, eh? Just simple clicking on first 20 results would take days if I really wanted to get to know the services offered. Not my way.

Then there’s this blog. WordPress offers some decent tools for image uploading and galleries. Well, why not?

First: they’d be at my own server taking up my space and my bandwidth.
Second: as the space and bandwidth are not free, I’d be the guy doing the paying part
Third: This blog is located at joint server at a finnish ISP. I strongly doubt if it’ll take any serious amounts of load (which I don’t think my “fancy photos” would create, but anyway).
Fourth: Licenses. Should perhaps get a CC-license or something as some persons roaming the internet tend to think anything without a clear license is free to take and use (which is not the case). Well yes, I think I have to do this, sometime. Not now.

In stead of those first two alternatives I’ve tried Flickr, Picasa (Google Photos?) and lately Facebook for sharing my photos. My impressions?

Flickr (wikipedia article):

owned by Yahoo, perhaps the biggest web2.0 photo sharing tool on web.
free account with 100 MB monthly limit (which is really decent)
up-to-date licensing systems (cc, mainly)
Somehow this just isn’t my cup of tea, don’t know why.

Picasa (wikipedia article)

owned by Google, perhaps more for private photo galleries than Flickr (imho).
free account with 1024 MB limit
TOS permits Google to “to use the uploaded photos to display on the website or via RSS feeds, and also for promoting Google services royalty-free”
I’ve used Picasa for years. For some reason don’t like it.

Facebook (wikipedia article)

well. not exactly a photosharing tool but a social networking website. Has some sharing tools and your buddies are already there, aren’t they?
free account, “unlimited amount of albums” – though in each album can only be certain amount of photos
TOS permits Facebook to do just about anything with your photos (highlights by yours truly):
“By posting User Content to any part of the Site, you automatically grant, and you represent and warrant that you have the right to grant, to the Company an irrevocable, perpetual, non-exclusive, transferable, fully paid, worldwide licence (with the right to sublicence) to use, copy, publicly perform, publicly display, reformat, translate, excerpt (in whole or in part) and distribute such User Content for any purpose, commercial, advertising, or otherwise, on or in connection with the Site or the promotion thereof, to prepare derivative works of, or incorporate into other works, such User Content, and to grant and authorise sublicences of the foregoing”
Used this one, too. Somehow the abovementioned gives me the shivers, though.

So, no decent shots to Facebook. Picasa web is not for me. Perhaps should (again!) try to use Flickr and then use some plugin with my blog.

Or then I’ll just post the photos here.

Updating Is Fun

Doodlings and WordPress 2.5 Gallery Feature.

As some may already know, I doodle. A lot.

Posted some doodlings to “art?” -section of this blog while I wanted to test the new gallery feature of WordPress 2.5 (some info) .

First impressions after the break…

Well, ok. Quite nice a feature.

Saw the Screencast from Matt demoing the feature. thought it’s cool. Tried to implement it at art?-page. There wasn’t that much help available, as I tried first to include the images from the original location.

Put in the pics with “add media” –> “Choose File” –> “From URL“.
Typed the shorthand code gallery (in brackets, don’t feel like escaping them atm).
Nothing happens… Ok, have to upload the pictures (or so I think at the moment.)
Download the pics from original location, upload them with the add media function. Select the Gallery and insert the gallery in to page. Voila! There it is, but twice (’cause I typed it already once).
Remove the first (automatically inserted code, save (publish)and there it is.

All in all, quite nice and simple. Will use it in future, too.

.htaccess and WordPress 2.5.

Working with WordPress is at best very, very rewarding. At worst it’s a total nightmare.

As it was now.

Ok, I installed the most recent version of WordPress, 2.5.1. Upgraded, downloaded some themes, installed stuff, fetched some content from my old blog.

Then, unfortunately, I stumbled head first on the pretty permalinks. Yeah, yeah, woe the vanity.

Anyway, I ran to “Settings” of my little sweet blog, tried to find the old spot. Wasn’t there.

Spotted it. Put on the fancy url’s. Then, BOOM!

Surprise, surprise, it didn’t work.

Luckily this was not the first time, so I went in search of the infamous .htaccess -file. Didn’f find it, ’cause WordPress wrote it in the wrong directory. Set the permissions on my ftp-client to show all. Searched again.

Hey, there it was! In the wrong fucking directory. How nice.

Copied it, deleted the .htaccess. Everything back to normal?

Yep, for a while.

Then, again, the same thing. “Error 404” (followed and preceded by some Internal Server Errors), which is always nice to see. So, another iteration, this time writing an empty .htaccess to that wrong directory and setting it’s write permissions to another mode.

Now it should be working.

K2-teema on WordPress -blogimoottorille tarkoitettu “edistynyt” (ulkoasu)teema.

Esimerkiksi tämä blogi käyttää nykyisessä versiossaan (20.2.2007) K2-teemaa suhteellisen paljon hyväkseen.

Mikä sitten tekee K2:sta “edistyneen“? K2 “ei keitä puolestasi kahvia” (about@K2), mutta saattaa tehdä elämästä kummasti helpompaa WordPressin teemojen kanssa puljatessa.

WordPress-blogimoottorin ulkoasu on muunneltavissa erillisten teemojen avulla.
Sinällään loppukäyttäjälle itse ylläpidetyssä tai vastaavassa WordPressin asennuksessa uuden ulkoasun käyttöönotto on helppoa; esimerkiksi osoitteesta themes.wordpress.net löytyy vino pino erilaisia ulkoasuja, jotka saa käyttöön helpohkosti. Muutama siirtely ja klikkaus ja uusi teema on asennettu!

Ongelmat alkavat oikeastaan siinä kohtaa, kun teema on huonosti lokalisoitu (suomenkielinen blogi ja valikot englanniksi!) tai teemaa pitäisi muuten mukauttaa; mitäs nyt tehdään?

WordPressin kojelaudan kautta pääsee käsiksi (mikäli kirjoitusoikeudet ovat kunnossa) CSS-tiedostoihin. Ok, hyvä, tällä saadaan ulkoasua muutettua jo jonkin verran. Mutta: asettelua tai käyttöliittymätekstejä ei pysty muokkaamaan.

Jotta asetteluun ja muihin edellisiin pääsee käsiksi, pitää laittaa kädet rasvaan ja perehtyä WordPress-teeman sielunelämään.

Teema koostuu useista erillisistä php -tiedostoista (php hypertext preprocessor), jotka sijaitsevat omassa alihakemistossaan (jokaiselle teemalle oma hakemistonsa). Tyypillisesti omat tiedostonsa määritellään pääsivulle (index), teeman ns. header-, footer- ja sidebar- osioille, virhesivuille (404) jne. Edellisten valinnassa noudatetaan tiettyä hierarkiaa.

Jätetään tekniset seikat sikseen hetkeksi ja pohdiskellaan:
Jos haluan vaihtaa sivupalkissa sijaitsevan “blogroll” -tekstin joksin muuksi (esimerkiksi muotoon “naapurusto”), mitä teen?

Kojelaudan (dashboard) kautta en pääse käsiksi teksteihin. Siispä: tekstieditorilla “sidebar.php” -tiedoston kimppuun, sieltä sitten (jostain, teemasta riippuen) teksti Blogroll ja napunapu, tallennus ja kas, teksti muuttui.
Ehkä.

Haasteita? Tekstieditori, yhteys palvelimelle, HTML -tietämys (Hypertext markup language)…

Välitilinpäätös?

WordPressin nykyinen ulkoasujärjestelmä (lue: teemojen käyttö) on sinällään ilmaisuvoimainen ja ns. tavalliselle käyttäjälle toimiva ratkaisu. Uusia teemoja löytyy verkosta vino pino ja widgetit laajentavat toiminnallisuutta.

Raja tulee vastaan kuitenkin suhteellisen pian; olisi mukavaa saada teemaan lisättyä esimerkiksi tässä blogissa sivupalkissa näkyvä last.fm -listaus tai uusimmat delicious -tagit.

Mitenkäs se tehtäisiin?

Sidebar.php karvaisiin käsiin ja siitä vaan sitten eteenpäin!
… tai jos sattuu niin hyvin, että käytetty ulkoasuteema on varustettu widget-yhteensopiva, on kaikki paljon helpompaa (tosin perus-WP vaatii laajennuspalikan toimiakseen widget-tuella) …

Rakastaa sinua kuin kissanpentu!

Edellinen on surkea suomennos K2 -teeman sloganista (“loves you like a kitten“), mutta kertonee oleellisen.

K2 on edistynyt WP-teema, jonka avulla elämästä tulee kenties hieman helpompaa. K2 on eräänlainen kehys (framework) jo itsessään, vaikkakin se asennetaan teemana (ja sijaitsee WP:n kojelaudassa ulkoasun alla).

Sinällään K2 on kuuluisan Kubrick -teeman (nykyisen WordPressin oletusteema) jälkeläinen, pidemmälle kehitetty versio.

Perusteemasta K2 eroaa siinä, että sen avulla on mahdollista tehdä monia mielenkiintoisia asioita koskematta ollenkaan tekstieditoriin tai siirtelemättä tiedostoja palvelimelle. Esimerkiksi sivupalkin otsikoiden muuttaminen tai uusien kohteiden lisääminen sujuu helposti ja mukavasti!

Uuden ulkoasun lisääminen K2-teemaa käytettäessä sujuu siirtämällä oma CSS-tiedosto palvelimelle. Edellisen jälkeen ulkoasu valitaan K2:n omalta asetus-sivulta.

Uuden kohteen lisääminen sivupalkkiin onnistuu “K2 sidebars” -sivulta. Valitaan modulin tyyppi, annetaan otsikko ja siellähän se on, sivuilla näkyvissä.

Esimerkiksi php- tai html-lohkon lisääminen on lähes yhtä helppoa; valitaan modulin tyypiksi “php” tai “html”, liimataan haluttu koodi sisältöön, tallennetaan ja taas saatiin maailmasta parempi paikka!

Suomessa? Ei hätää. Moduleille saa antaa itse otsikon tai sitten jättää otsikon näyttämättä. Ainahan kaiken ei tarvitse olla kolmannella kotimaisella?

Mutta!

Kaikki hauskuus loppuu aikanaan. K2 on kohtuullisen raskas jo sinällään palvelinta kuormittavan WordPressin päälle rakennettuna. Silti mielestäni kokeilemisen arvoinen!
